KUALA LUMPUR, August 27 - The ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) 3.0 will be presented to the heads of member states at the upcoming ASEAN Summit this October.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the agreement demonstrates that negotiations with China can be conducted in a rules-based, inclusive, and future-oriented manner. He added that the agreement covers key areas such as the digital economy, green growth, supply chain connectivity, technical standards, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

"China is clearly still ASEAN's largest trading partner and has been for many years. However, it is important to note that ASEAN is now also China's largest trading partner. So, this is a two-way trade relationship,"

Tengku told the media. He added that it is important for ASEAN to continuously review trade agreements to ensure they remain relevant.

"This is version 3.0, meaning it is the third update," Tengku said.

Negotiations on the upgraded ASEAN-China deal began in November 2022 and concluded in May this year, just after Trump's tariff offensive kicked into gear. Their first FTA came into force back in 2010.

China has previously said the agreement would pave the way for improved market access in sectors such as agriculture, the digital economy and pharmaceuticals between China and ASEAN.
