ROME/ATHENS: Israeli forces boarded several boats carrying foreign activists and aid bound for Gaza and took them to an Israeli port on Wednesday, disrupting a protest that had become one of the most high-profile symbols of opposition to Israel's blockade of the enclave.

"Multiple vessels of Global Sumud Flotilla - notably Alma, Sirius, Adara - were illegally intercepted and boarded by Israeli Occupation Forces in international waters, "Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) said in a statement. GSF is an organization trying to get aid into Gaza using ships setting sail from ports across the Mediterranean.

- In addition to the boats confirmed to be intercepted, live-stream coverage and communication has been lost with multiple other boats. We are diligently working to account for all participants and crew," GSF said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a strong condemnation:

"I condemn in the strongest terms Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. These vessels carried unarmed civilians and life-saving humanitarian supplies for Gaza, yet they were met with intimidation and coercion." Anwar pledged that Malaysia would use "all legitimate and lawful means" to hold Israel accountable, especially for the safety of at least eight Malaysians aboard.

The Israeli navy has intercepted boats carrying aid to Gaza and detained the activists aboard, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said several vessels that form part of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) had been "safely stopped" and that those aboard were being transferred to an Israeli port. It added that the navy had told the vessels to change course as they were "approaching an active combat zone". The GSF described the interception as "illegal" and "not an act of defence" but "a brazen act of desperation".
