Thai authorities have launched a sweeping investigation into allegations that Israeli nationals are illegally running businesses on Koh Phangan. The move follows weeks of public anger over claims that some foreign visitors are exploiting visa loopholes and disrespecting local customs. The controversy has shaken the island's reputation as a peaceful tourist paradise and raised fears of deeper cultural friction.
Residents say the island, located in Surat Thani province, has increasingly become known as a "second Tel Aviv." They allege that many Israeli visitors are not just tourists but long-term settlers who manage businesses through Thai nominees.
The backlash has spread across multiple online posts and articles by influencers and independent media, including a "Save Koh Phangan" page reflecting frustrations that the island is following the path of Pai in Mae Hong Son province. That northern town saw an influx of Israeli tourists who stayed long-term, established businesses and religious sites, with some displaying behavior that prompted Thai authorities to launch a major investigation earlier this year

According to data from the Surat Thani Immigration Division, 4,030 Israelis are currently in the province - 2,548 on Koh Phangan, 1,279 on Koh Samui, 11 on Koh Tao and 12 on the mainland. Of these, 987 are long-term residents, including 349 involved in business, while 3,043 are short-term visitors, 2,942 of whom are tourists.
Local sources report that some Israelis on Koh Phangan operate villas, restaurants, tour companies and other businesses primarily serving Israeli visitors. A communal centre, or Chabad, has also been established for religious and social activities.
